September 9, 2008 - October 19, 2008

An NCDOT diagram of all three bridges -- the existing pontoon bridge, the detour bridge and the high-rise bridge under construction.
September 9, 2008: The contractor has begun excavating for another foundation for the new bridge at the edge of the intracoastal waterway. Specifically, workmen are casting a work panel for upcoming drill shafts and footings of the main bridge.
Newly made concrete deck slabs for both the detour bridge and the main bridge are stacked between the bridge support columns.
These are slurry storage tanks that will be used to keep the shaft sides in place below concrete and steel layers.
September 15, 2008: The contractor's work on the detour is within 100 feet of the end.
September 23, 2008: The end of the detour, before being paved, is on the right.
A single-lane road was in effect during work on the detour.
September 28, 2008: The men building the detour bridge have almost finished crossing the marsh to the solid portion of the detour. They anticipate finishing by 10/11.
October 4, 2008: This sea wall made of sheet piling is in the area that will hold the footing for the bridge support.
This new current end of the workbridge juts out into the waterway.
This crane waits to continue extending the workbridge.
These are the steel tracks of the crane.
These red items have been delivered for future construction.
This is additional material for future construction.
These rebars will be covered in concrete and form the end bent. The end bent is what the end of the bridge will rest on where cars enter or exit the bridge.
October 19, 2008: This is the end of the paved detour.
This photo shows some of the concrete deck slabs that workers have been making for months.
Although I will remove these non-construction photos later, I want to share the new views of the marsh from the detour bridge.
This is the beginning of the detour, coming from the mainland.
The work bridge now extends further toward the Intracoastal Waterway, close to the pontoon bridge.
Work continues on the end bent.
